The Bihar Cabinet has approved the creation of five new private universities. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting in Patna on June 24, 2026. The Council of Ministers approved 45 proposals in that meeting. The five new universities will be established in five different districts of the state. The universities will be located in Madhubani, Siwan, Nawada, Patna, and Aurangabad. The state government stated that this move will improve the higher education infrastructure in Bihar. It will also help increase the gross enrollment ratio (GER) in the state.

Bihar New Private Universities List 2026

The Cabinet note listed all five institutions along with the districts where they will be set up. The full list of approved private universities is provided below.

Why the State Approved These Universities

The state government mentioned the need to make higher education more accessible. Bihar has historically had a low gross enrollment ratio. By adding private universities, the state aims to reduce the burden on public institutions. It will also provide more seats for students to pursue degrees locally. The new universities will operate under the Bihar Private Universities Act, 2013. This law outlines the process for setting up private universities in the state. Each university must follow the guidelines set by the Higher Education Department. They will also need to gain recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) before starting admissions.

Other Important Cabinet Decisions on June 24

Along with approving the universities, the Cabinet also cleared 45 other proposals. These included decisions related to urban infrastructure, judicial buildings, and tourism. The key approvals apart from the universities are listed below.

ProposalDetail
Chhapra Sewerage Network ProjectRs 76.48 crore under AMRUT 2.0
Sindhu Darshan Pilgrimage SchemeRs 20,000 assistance per traveller
Heli-Tourism and Tourism Service SchemeCleared for 2026 rollout
Court Building, Maharajganj (Siwan)Rs 34.33 crore
Court Building, BegusaraiRs 39.04 crore
Court Building, Rajauli (Nawada)Rs 38.38 crore

What This Means for Students

Students in Bihar can look forward to more degree seats in the near future. Programs are expected to include engineering, management, arts, and science. The fee structures for each course have not been revealed yet. Each university will publish its own admission guidelines. The Higher Education Department will provide more information as it becomes available. Students should wait for UGC recognition before applying. Verified course lists will be posted on each university's website after they start operations.

How to Stay Updated on These New Universities

Students should only trust official government sources for updates. The Bihar Higher Education Department is responsible for all notifications related to private universities. Official information will be available on its website in the coming weeks. You can visit the official portal at state.bihar.gov.in/educationbihar. The UGC private university list includes every recognized institution.

Action Plan for Candidates

Monitor the Bihar Higher Education Department's website for official updates. Wait for the UGC recognition status of each approved university. Check the official website of the chosen university once it opens. Verify the courses, eligibility, and fee structures before applying. Make sure to keep your Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and ID documents ready.
