The Bar Council of India (BCI) is poised to announce the official notification and key dates for the AIBE 20 (All India Bar Examination) 2025. This examination is a mandatory step for law graduates to be eligible to practice law in India. While the official dates are awaited, the exam is anticipated to be conducted in an offline, pen-and-paper format, likely in December 2025.

Exam Structure and Syllabus

The AIBE 20 exam will be a 3-hour test comprising 100 multiple-choice questions. A significant detail for aspirants is that there will be no negative marking. The syllabus is based on 19 subjects of law, with specific subjects carrying more weight. For instance, Constitutional Law, the Indian Penal Code, and the Code of Criminal Procedure are among the subjects with higher weightage, each having 10 questions. Aspiring lawyers should note that while the use of Bare Acts (without notes) might be permitted, the exam is no longer open-book.

Eligibility and Fees

To be eligible for the AIBE 20, candidates must hold a 3-year or 5-year LLB degree from a university recognized by the BCI and must be enrolled with a state bar council. The application fee for General and OBC candidates is ₹3,500, while for SC and ST candidates, it is ₹2,500. A recent Supreme Court ruling has upheld these fees, stating that they are necessary for the BCI to cover the significant costs associated with conducting the examination.

Preparation for Law Students

For those preparing to take the AIBE 20, it is crucial to focus on the designated syllabus and practice with previous years' question papers. The exam tests a candidate's fundamental knowledge and understanding of the law rather than rote learning.
