What drives each NIRF score

BITS Pilani's lead comes from teaching resources and graduation outcomes, not research. SRM and VIT score higher on research, but BITS gains more from how its graduates finish their degrees and get placed.
| Institute | NIRF rank | Teaching, Learning and Resources (30%) | Research and Professional Practice (30%) | Graduation Outcomes (20%) | Outreach and Inclusivity (10%) | Perception (10%) | Total |

Source: each institute's "Data Submitted by Institution for India Rankings 2025" on nirfindia.org, for example, BITS Pilani and KIIT; VIT's figures are from VIT's copy of its NIRF 2025 engineering data. Placed % = placed divided by graduating on time, calculated by us. Undergraduate, institute-wide, self-reported, batch graduating 2023-24. Some students may appear in both the placed and higher-studies columns, so we do not add them.
Median salary over three batches (₹ lakh)
Institute | Batch 2021-22 | Batch 2022-23 | Batch 2023-24 |
| IIIT Hyderabad (4-year B.Tech) | 30.36 | 30.30 | 32.00 |

| VIT Vellore | 8.00 | 9.00 | 8.99 |
| MIT Manipal | 8.00 | 8.88 | 8.50 |
| Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | 4.50 | 7.24 | 7.75 |
| KIIT | 4.50 | 7.50 | 7.40 |
| SRM Institute of Science and Technology | 4.49 | 6.10 | 6.20 |
Source: the same NIRF 2025 data submissions. Over these three batches, SRM's median rose from ₹4.49 lakh to ₹6.20 lakh and Amrita's from ₹4.50 lakh to ₹7.75 lakh, while BITS Pilani stayed between ₹18.00 and ₹19.00 lakh.
How to read these numbers

- Use the median, not the average or the highest package. One huge offer lifts an average; the median shows the middle student.
- Read placed % together with higher studies. VIT reports 1,255 graduates who chose higher studies and Amrita 623. Those students are not counted as "placed", so placed % can look lower than the real outcome.
- Watch for big swings. KIIT's placed % was 46.2% in 2021-22 (1,751 of 3,789), 72.8% in 2022-23 (2,636 of 3,619) and 34.8% in 2023-24 (1,236 of 3,547). NIRF data does not explain why. Ask the college for its current report.
- Institute-wide is not branch-wise. Computer science usually pays differently from civil or mechanical. Ask for the branch report.
- Small batches behave differently. IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore graduate 188 and 120 students a year.
BITS Pilani's own newer figures: BITS' placement highlights for the 2024-25 report show 2,490+ students placed, 615+ recruiters, an overall median of ₹19.05 LPA and an overall average of ₹22.28 LPA across all programmes. These include postgraduate degrees, so they do not compare directly with the table above.
Research snapshot

KIIT reports the highest sponsored research income of these ten institutes in 2023-24, ₹106.29 crore. That figure was ₹9.59 crore a year earlier, an elevenfold jump in one year.
Institute | Sponsor projects | Sponsored research income (₹ crore) | Full-time PhDs awarded (including integrated PhD) |
| BITS Pilani | 329 | 33.92 | 73 |
| VIT Vellore | 177 | 27.50 | 290 |
| SRM Institute of Science and Technology | 106 | 12.11 | 151 |
| Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | 55 | 50.15 | 65 |
| Thapar Institute | 43 | 8.94 | 104 |
| KIIT | 104 | 106.29 | 144 |
| BIT Mesra | 98 | 14.58 | 48 |
| MIT Manipal | 73 | 5.34 | 42 |
| IIIT Hyderabad | 119 | 45.37 | 23 |
| IIIT Bangalore | 118 | 102.12 | 8 |
Source: the same NIRF 2025 data submissions, financial year 2023-24. Totals are not adjusted for size, so bigger institutes show bigger numbers. BITS Pilani's sponsored projects grew from 126 in 2021-22 to 329 in 2023-24.
Why this matters to a student: research income and PhD output matter most if you plan an M.Tech, research or a study-abroad application. For a job straight after B.Tech, the placement table matters more.
Which entrance exam does each private college use?
Most top private colleges run their own entrance test, and several also accept JEE Main. BITS Pilani admits B.E. students through BITSAT, its own computer-based test.
| Exam | Used by | Note |
| BITSAT | BITS Pilani (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad) | BITS' own test for first-degree programmes |
| VITEEE | VIT | Other routes may apply by campus. |
| SRMJEEE | SRM Institute of Science and Technology | Other routes may apply. |
| AEEE | Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | JEE Main may also be accepted. |
| KIITEE | KIIT | JEE Main may also be accepted. |
| CUCET | Chandigarh University | JEE Main may also be accepted. |
| SAAT | Siksha 'O' Anusandhan | JEE Main may also be accepted. |
| MET | Manipal Institute of Technology | Manipal's own test |
| JEE Main | Thapar and many other private colleges | Run by the National Testing Agency |
| KCET, COMEDK, MHT CET, TNEA | Private colleges in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu | State routes |
Admission routes change every year. Confirm the exam and dates on each college's official admission notice. We have not confirmed the routes for Kalasalingam Academy and KL Deemed University.
Can I get into a top private college without JEE Main?
Yes. BITS Pilani (BITSAT), VIT (VITEEE), SRM (SRMJEEE), Amrita (AEEE), KIIT (KIITEE), Chandigarh University (CUCET) and Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (SAAT) run their own tests. Thapar admits through JEE Main.
Eligibility for a private B.Tech
Most private B.Tech programmes ask for Class 12 (or equivalent) with physics and mathematics, and many also require chemistry. The minimum marks and subject rules differ by college and change each year, so check the official admission notice of each college before you apply.
How much do private engineering colleges cost?
BITS Pilani's 4-year tuition plus admission fee is ₹25,77,100 for students joining in 2026-27. We calculated this from BITS' official schedule, which lists the tuition for every year of study, not just the first.
Item (B.E., students admitted 2026-27; same at Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad) | Amount |
| Admission fee (one time) | ₹64,100 |
| Year 1 (2026-27) tuition: 2 semesters × ₹291,500 | ₹583,000 |
| Year 2 (2027-28) tuition: 2 × ₹306,000 | ₹612,000 |
| Year 3 (2028-29) tuition: 2 × ₹321,500 | ₹6,43,000 |
| Year 4 (2029-30) tuition: 2 × ₹3,37,500 | ₹6,75,000 |
| 4-year tuition plus admission fee (our total) | ₹25,77,100 |
| Hostel, on-campus students only | ₹36,000 per semester in 2026-27; BITS says it is revised upward every year |
| Summer term, only if you register | ₹1,02,000 in 2026-27 (35% of the semester tuition), rising every year |
| Student's union fee plus student's aid fund | ₹675 a year |
| Caution deposit | ₹3,000 (refundable) |
| Mess and electricity advance; other advances | ₹10,000 and ₹12,000 per semester, adjusted at the end of the semester |
Source: BITS Pilani, Schedule of Fees 2026-27, read 28 September 2026. BITS also states that any new government levy or tax is passed on to students.
What year 1 costs in cash: an on-campus student pays about ₹7,22,775 in the first year (admission fee, two semesters, hostel, union and aid fees, and caution deposit), plus ₹44,000 in advances that are adjusted later. This is our calculation.
Practical example: is the fee worth it?
This is one simple way to compare cost with outcome, using only official numbers. It is an illustration, not a prediction.
- Minimum 4-year cost at BITS Pilani: ₹25,77,100 for tuition and admission, plus ₹2,88,000 for hostel over eight semesters at the 2026-27 rate, plus small fees and the deposit. That is about ₹28.7 lakh, before mess, any summer terms and yearly hostel rises.
- Typical outcome: the median salary of placed BITS B.E. graduates was ₹18 lakh a year for the 2023-24 batch, and 89.1% of on-time graduates were placed.
- Simple ratio: ₹28.7 lakh ÷ ₹18 lakh ≈ 1.6. The minimum cost equals about 1.6 years of the median placed salary, before tax and living costs.
- What this does not show: your branch, whether you are placed, salary after tax, loan interest, or future fee changes.
Use the same four steps for any college once you have its official fee schedule and its NIRF data.
What to check at every other college
We have not verified fees for the other institutes on this page, so check these on each official fee page:
- Tuition for each of the four years, and whether it rises every year
- Hostel and mess charges
- One-time charges and refundable deposits
- Scholarship and fee-waiver rules, and the marks you must keep to retain them
- The refund and withdrawal policy
A note on money decisions. Fees and education loans are financial decisions. Confirm every figure with the college fee office and your lender before you pay or sign. This page is information, not financial advice.
Private college or NIT: what to compare
Compare the same branch at both colleges, using the same year of data. The branch you will actually get and the full four-year cost usually matter more than rank or brand.
Question to ask | Why it matters |
| Which branch will you actually get? | A preferred branch at one college can matter more than a bigger name at another |
| What is the complete four-year cost? | Include hostel, mess, deposits and yearly fee rises. |
| What are the median salary and placed % for that branch? | Institute-wide numbers hide branch differences. |
| Is the programme accredited? | Check NAAC on naac.gov.in and NBA on nbaind.org |
| Are scholarships or fee waivers available? | They can change the cost a lot |
| Where is the campus? | Location affects internships and living costs. |

- List your branches: the ones you want, the ones you would accept, and the ones you would not take at any college.
- Match your exams: check which tests each college accepts this year.
- Set a four-year budget that includes hostel, mess and yearly fee rises. Use the four-step fee example above.
- Compare median salary and placed % for your branch, from official reports, not highest packages.
- Build a mixed list of reach, match and safer options, because cut-offs change every year.
Red flags before you pay a fee
- Only the highest package is shown. Ask for the median and the number of students placed.
- No placement report. A real report shows eligible students, students placed, median salary and year.
- Only first-year fees are shown. Ask for all four years, as BITS publishes.
- Accreditation is unclear. Check NAAC and NBA on their own websites.
- Data is not for your campus or branch. Match the numbers to what you are applying for.
- Big one-year jumps with no explanation. Ask about them, for example, KIIT's placed % or research income.
- The refund policy is unclear. Read it before you pay.
Why other rankings show different colleges
NIRF is the only government ranking, and its data can be checked by anyone. Private rankings use their own methods, so their lists differ.
| Ranking | Run by | How it works | Private leader in its latest list |
| NIRF 2025 Engineering | Ministry of Education, Government of India | Five weighted parts; each institute's data PDF is public. | BITS Pilani (overall rank 11) |
| IIRF 2026 | International Institutional Ranking Framework, a private company | Seven parts, including placement performance; separate lists for private colleges and private universities | BITS Pilani (private universities); BMS College of Engineering (private colleges) |
| Times Engineering Survey 2026 | Times Group | Its own survey; top 125 private list | SRM and BITS Pilani, joint 1st. VIT, Thapar, Amrita and KIIT do not appear in its shown ranks |
| Collegedunia CD Score | Collegedunia | Its own score out of 1,000; a filterable database rather than one list | Depends on the filters |

How we built and checked this list
What counts as private?
We include private deemed universities, state private universities and privately managed colleges. We leave out government institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIIT Allahabad, and state or central universities. IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore are not-for-profit deemed universities; we include them and label them clearly.
How we built the list.
- We took the official NIRF 2025 Engineering list (ranks 1 to 100 and the 101 to 150 band) from nirfindia.org on 28 September 2026.
- We marked each institute as private or not by its legal type.
- We kept NIRF's order. We did not create our own ranking.
- We used institutes' NIRF data submissions for placement and research numbers and calculated the placed % ourselves.
- We recalculated all ten top totals from the five NIRF parts; every one matched to within 0.01 points.
Our source rules.
Tier | Source type | How we use it |
1 | Government and institute documents: NIRF pages and data PDFs, official fee schedules | The basis for every number |
2 | News reports that quote official sources | Leads only, confirmed against a Tier 1 source before use |
3 | Portals, blogs and private rankings | Never a source for numbers; named only when comparing rankings |
Every number shows its year and source. We label our own calculations. NIRF figures are reported by each institute; we have not audited them.

KIIT reported 1,236 of 3,547 on-time graduates placed in 2023-24 (34.8%), down from 72.8% the year before. The NIRF data does not give a reason, so ask KIIT for its current placement report.
19. What is the difference between average and median salary?
The average adds all salaries and divides by the number of students, so a few very high offers can raise it. The median is the middle salary, which shows the typical placed student more fairly.
20. Is NIRF 2026 out?
Not as of 28 September 2026. The Ministry of Education had not published NIRF 2026, and news reports expected it in late September. NIRF 2025, released on 4 September 2025, remains the latest official ranking.
21. How can I check a college's NIRF data myself?
Open nirfindia.org, choose Ranking, then 2025, then Engineering. Find the institute and open its PDF icon, labelled "Data Submitted by Institution". It lists placements, median salary, research income and faculty numbers.
