The wait for the NEET PG 2025 All India Quota (AIQ) counselling schedule has stretched into its second month since the results were declared in August, triggering significant anxiety among thousands of postgraduate medical aspirants. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which manages admissions for 50% of the nation’s postgraduate medical seats, has yet to release the official schedule, confirming that it is awaiting direction from the Supreme Court (SC) regarding a pending plea on the examination's transparency.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2025 results were published on August 19, 2025, and as per the typical timeline, the counselling process was widely expected to begin in September. However, the schedule remains in limbo because the Apex Court recently sought a formal response from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) regarding the transparency concerns raised in the petition. Until the SC is satisfied and provides clearance, the MCC appears unable to proceed with the critical counselling phases.

Aspirants and Residents Voice Concerns

The continued delay has resulted in a wave of appeals and pleas directed at authorities, including the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Union Health Minister. Anxious students have taken to social media platforms, highlighting that the counselling process should have commenced weeks ago, as initially anticipated by NMC officials.

Beyond the mental stress on the future doctors, the delay is also directly impacting patient care across the country's tertiary care hospitals. Current resident doctors, who are essential for the smooth functioning of these hospitals, are already heavily burdened. With the new batch of PG residents—who should have joined by now—unable to report for duty, hospitals are operating with only two batches of resident doctors. This overburdens the existing staff and raises concerns about sustainable healthcare delivery. As one resident pointed out, the delay showcases a disregard for the "ground reality" of an overworked hospital workforce.

Hope for a Mid-October Start

Amidst the official silence from the MCC, a glimmer of hope has been offered by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) Doctors Association. According to recent communication with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) officials, FAIMA hinted at the strong possibility that the NEET PG counselling could commence by mid-October.

Aspirants are actively coordinating, urging fellow students and their respective Doctors' Associations to collectively press the Health Minister for the immediate release of the counselling timeline. They emphasize that a timely start is crucial for reducing the workload of current residents and ensuring a functional academic calendar for the incoming PG batch.

The deadline for NBEMS to file its response to the Supreme Court’s query is approaching, meaning the court is likely to take up the matter soon. All medical aspirants are advised to monitor the official websites of the MCC and the NBEMS closely for any immediate updates following the Supreme Court's next hearing.
