Major Change in DAT Prelims Weightage
The most significant update for the NID DAT 2026 cycle is the change in the weightage of the two-stage examination. Historically, the DAT Prelims score contributed to the final merit list, but for 2026 admissions, the role of the Prelims exam has been dramatically modified:
The DAT Prelims will now be ONLY a shortlisting tool. Its score will not count towards the final merit rank.
This means a fundamental shift in preparation strategy is required. Your goal in the Prelims (December 21, 2025) is simply to score high enough to qualify for the second and final stage: DAT Mains.
The DAT Mains will now carry of the weightage for final admission. This stage typically comprises a Studio Test and a Personal Interview/In-Person Sensitivity Test. With the entire selection burden shifted to the Mains, aspirants must place a huge emphasis on developing their hands-on creative skills, portfolio presentation, design rationale, and communication abilities. The Studio Test and Personal Interview are now the absolute determinants of securing a seat at NID.
Aspirants are strongly advised to secure their registration well before the December 1st deadline to avoid any last-minute technical glitches. A focused and intense preparation plan, prioritizing studio skills and interview preparation, is the key to success this year.
