In a major boost to medical education in Kerala, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its approval for the establishment of two new government medical colleges, which will add a total of 100 new MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-2026. This decision brings great news for thousands of aspiring doctors in the state, increasing their opportunities to secure a seat in a government institution.

The two new colleges, located in Wayanad and Kasaragod, have been sanctioned an intake of 50 MBBS seats each. The Kerala Health Minister, Veena George, confirmed that the approval was granted after both institutions successfully met the stringent requirements set by the NMC regarding infrastructure and academic facilities. The state government is now making arrangements to commence admissions for the current academic year in these colleges.

Development of the New Colleges

The new institutions are being developed in a phased manner to match the standards of other government medical colleges in the state. The Wayanad college has already established a multipurpose block and a 60-seat nursing college, and has also recruited 140 staff members. Similarly, the academic block of the Kasaragod college has been completed, with a hospital block currently under construction with an allocation of ₹160 crore.

With the official approval in place, these new seats will be a part of the state's seat matrix for the ongoing NEET 2025 counselling process. Aspirants who have qualified in the NEET exam now have an expanded list of options to consider when filling their choices in the upcoming counselling rounds. This development is expected to positively impact the cut-off scores and provide a greater chance for students to pursue their dream of becoming a doctor.
