The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released a significant update concerning the third round of NEET UG 2025 counselling

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released a significant update concerning the third round of NEET UG 2025 counselling, focusing on the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) category conversion and major changes to the MBBS seat matrix. These updates are crucial for medical stream aspirants participating in the final phases of the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling for MBBS and BDS courses.

Provisionally Eligible NRI Candidates

A total of 363 candidates have been provisionally approved for 'conversion' of their status from Indian to the NRI category for Round 3 seat allotment. This conversion allows these students to participate in the counselling for the NRI quota seats available in Deemed and Central Universities.

The MCC has further bifurcated this list into two priority levels, in line with the established counselling rules for NRI admissions:

  • Priority 1: This group includes 40 students who are NRI candidates themselves or the children of NRIs.
  • Priority 2: This list comprises 323 candidates who are the first- or second-degree relatives of NRI wards.

Aspiring doctors should note that the conversion is provisional. It is based on the scrutiny of documents submitted via email, such as the notarized affidavit from the NRI sponsor, the certificate of relationship through a family tree, and proof of the sponsor's NRI status (Passport, Visa, NRE Bank Account details, etc.). The final admission and confirmation of the NRI status will depend entirely on the physical verification of all original documents by the respective allotted college authorities during the reporting period. Failure to produce valid, original documents as per MCC's guidelines (which incorporate the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) revised guidelines) will lead to the cancellation of the allotted seat.

Major Revision to the MBBS Seat Matrix

Another critical announcement involves a substantial revision in the MBBS seat matrix for Round 3, which significantly impacts the overall seat availability for engineering stream aspirants as well. The latest notice confirms a net addition of seats across India, which typically eases the competition slightly.

  • Added Seats: A total of 9,200 new seats have been added to the seat matrix for Round 3 seat allotment. These additions often come from new medical colleges receiving final approval or existing colleges increasing their intake capacity (renewal) following inspections and clearance from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
  • Dropped Seats: Conversely, 456 seats have been dropped from the matrix. This removal is generally due to various administrative reasons, such as pending court cases, regulatory non-compliance issues in certain institutions, or a delay in securing final affiliation/renewal from the NMC or concerned universities.

This dynamic change in the seat matrix means that students must check the updated final vacancy list before beginning their choice filling or choice locking process for Round 3. An increase of over 9,000 seats is a substantial expansion of opportunity for students aiming for a medical seat this year. The increased seat availability in the final rounds of counselling provides a crucial opportunity to secure a seat, especially in central and deemed universities.
