The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, the organizing body for the current academic cycle, has officially confirmed that the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2026 will be conducted on Sunday, May 17, 2026. This announcement allows thousands of high-potential engineering aspirants to align their final preparation strategies with a definitive timeline. As the second and final stage of the IIT admission process, the exam remains the sole gateway for securing a seat in the 23 prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology across the country.

Official Examination Schedule and Paper Format

The Advanced examination will follow its traditional format, consisting of two compulsory objective-type papers. According to the information brochure released by IIT Roorkee, Paper 1 is scheduled for the morning session, while Paper 2 will take place in the afternoon. Candidates must appear for both papers to be eligible for the final rank list. The test will be conducted in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode in both English and Hindi, testing the students' depth of knowledge in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The eligibility to appear for this elite exam is strictly limited to the top 2,50,000 successful candidates from the JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1). While the registration window for these qualifiers will open in late April, foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates have been provided a separate direct entry path. These international aspirants can begin their registration earlier in April, as they are not required to clear the JEE Main hurdle.

  • Exam Date: May 17, 2026 (Sunday).
  • Paper 1 Timings: 09:00 AM to 12:00 PM IST.
  • Paper 2 Timings: 02:30 PM to 05:30 PM IST.
  • Total Duration: 6 hours of high-intensity testing.

Key Registration Dates and Eligibility Norms

The registration portal on the official website, jeeadv.ac.in, is slated to go live on April 23, following the declaration of the JEE Main results by the NTA. To be eligible, candidates must ensure they meet the age criteria—being born on or after October 1, 2001 (with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD categories). Furthermore, the Advanced rules permit a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years, meaning only those who appeared for their Class 12 exams for the first time in 2025 or 2026 are qualified to apply.

Conclusion

As the May 17 Advanced date approaches, candidates are shifting their focus toward the complex, multi-concept problems that define the IIT entrance standard. The release of the official brochure has also clarified that the 75% board marks requirement for IIT admission remains a key criterion for the final seat allocation through JoSAA. With the registration links expected to activate in April, students are advised to maintain a consistent revision schedule and utilize official practice tests to familiarize themselves with the CBT interface. The successful conclusion of this Advanced stage will lead directly to the Joint Seat Allocation process starting in early June.
