The Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) conducts two distinct entrance exams—the iDAT and the iMAT—for its design and management programs. This guide is your key to understanding the exam patterns, eligibility, and the complete admission process for design students and management aspirants.

The Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) is a top choice for students seeking a world-class design education. As an institution with an academic association with Kingston University, London, IIAD’s entrance process is meticulously designed to identify talent and creative potential. For admission into its various undergraduate and postgraduate programs, IIAD conducts two separate aptitude tests, so it's essential for aspirants to understand which one is right for them. For regular updates on these and other exams, follow Only Education News.

The Dual Entrance Exam System: iDAT vs. iMAT

IIAD has a two-part screening process that begins with an aptitude test tailored to your chosen stream.

  • For Design Courses (B.A. (Hons.) & M.A.): Candidates must take the IIAD Design Aptitude Test (iDAT). This applies to programs like Fashion Design, Communication Design, Interior Architecture & Design, and User Experience Design.
  • For Fashion Business Management (UG & PG): Candidates must take the IIAD Management Aptitude Test (iMAT).

Deep Dive into the IIAD Management Aptitude Test (iMAT)

The iMAT is specifically for those with a passion for the business side of the fashion and design world. It’s a two-hour written test that evaluates a candidate’s aptitude for management studies in a creative context.

  • Exam Pattern: The test is a combination of multiple-choice questions and writing tasks. It is offered in both online and offline modes, giving you the flexibility to choose. The test is divided into three key sections:
    • Language Proficiency: This section assesses your command over the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
    • Logical Reasoning: Here, your ability to analyze, interpret, and solve problems using logic, patterns, and sequences is tested.
    • Creative Thinking: This part uses writing tasks to evaluate your ability to articulate and express your ideas clearly and coherently, often through essay writing or storytelling prompts.
  • The Next Step: Once you clear the iMAT written test, the second and final stage of the admission process is a Personal Interview. This interview is your opportunity to discuss your motivation for choosing the program, your understanding of the industry, and your long-term design career aspirations.

The IIAD Design Aptitude Test (iDAT)

For design aspirants focusing on the creative and visual fields, the iDAT is the key. The exam and its subsequent round are a complete package designed to test your design prowess.

  • Exam Pattern: The iDAT is a 2.5-hour test that assesses a wide range of skills:
    • Visual and Creative Tasks: Questions may include drawing, sketching, and visual problems that test your imagination and ability to represent ideas.
    • Analytical Skills: You will face questions on logical reasoning, visual logic, and problem-solving.
    • General Awareness: The exam also tests your knowledge of art, culture, and design.
  • The Studio Simulation: Following the written test, shortlisted candidates for the design programs must participate in a Studio Simulation round. This is a hands-on, group activity where you work in a team to solve a creative problem using provided materials. It evaluates your teamwork, practical skills, and ability to articulate ideas in a collaborative environment.

Eligibility and Application Details

Meeting the eligibility criteria is a prerequisite for all design aspirants before applying to IIAD.

  • Undergraduate Programmes: You must have completed 10+2 (or an equivalent) in any stream with a minimum aggregate of 50%.
  • Postgraduate Programmes: You must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

The application fee for the IIAD entrance exam is typically INR 2,500. The exams are conducted in multiple phases throughout the academic year, so students have several opportunities to apply.
