Maharashtra School Admission Age Rules: Nursery Changes from 2027–28

Maharashtra has set a phased minimum-age framework for school admissions. Children entering nursery in the 2027–28 academic year must complete three years by June 30. The six-year requirement for Class 1 begins from 2030–31. The School Education Department’s government resolution dated October 15, 2026 sets a different starting year for each class. Parents planning admission should therefore check both their child’s age and the academic year in which that class’s rule begins.
Which age rule applies to which class?
| Admission class | Minimum completed age by June 30 | Applies from |
|---|---|---|
| Balvatika 1 / Nursery | 3 years | 2027–28 |
| Balvatika 2 / Junior KG | 4 years | 2028–29 |
| Balvatika 3 / Senior KG | 5 years | 2029–30 |
| Class 1 | 6 years | 2030–31 |
The June 30 cutoff refers to the admission year. For nursery admission in 2027–28, parents should calculate the child’s completed age on June 30, 2027. The Class 1 row should not be read as a new requirement taking effect immediately in 2026–27.
What happens to children already studying?
The resolution excludes existing nursery-to-Class-1 students in the 2026–27 session from these new age criteria. It also exempts regular students who have passed the preceding class at a recognised school from application of the age criteria when entering the next higher class. Parents whose children are already enrolled should take their existing school records into account rather than judge eligibility only from the new-entry table.
Is age relaxation allowed?
The order provides for a 15-day relaxation in minimum and maximum age at the school-head level for nursery through Class 1. Parents who may need this provision should ask the school how it will be applied to their child’s case and retain the school’s written guidance.
The Director of Primary Education, Pune, is to issue instructions for admissions under the revised framework. The resolution establishes age criteria; it does not announce one common application-opening date for all schools.
What should parents do next?
First, identify the intended class and admission year. Calculate the child’s age using June 30 of that year, then check the school’s admission notice and the government instructions together. If the child is already studying, ask the school to consider the relevant exemption before making a fresh-entry age assessment.
