Maharashtra has changed the admission process for first-year full-time postgraduate medical and dental courses for the 2026–27 academic year

Maharashtra has changed the admission process for first-year full-time postgraduate medical and dental courses for the 2026–27 academic year. Under the newly notified rules, the institute-level admission round has been discontinued.

Institutional-quota seats, Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota seats and stray-vacancy admissions will now be handled through the Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell’s centralised online process instead of being filled directly by individual colleges.

The Maharashtra government’s official public-information release says the new admission rules were notified on October 5, 2026. Candidates planning to participate in Maharashtra NEET PG or NEET MDS counselling should therefore follow the State CET Cell’s registration, merit, preference and allotment process for these seats.

What Has Changed in Maharashtra PG Medical Admissions?

Admission componentPosition under the new rules
Institute-level admission roundDiscontinued
Institutional-quota seatsTo be filled through the State CET Cell’s centralised online process
NRI-quota seatsTo be filled through the centralised online process
Stray-vacancy admissionsTo be conducted through the State CET Cell
Candidate eligibility cut-offEligibility must be held by the last date of registration

The change affects the method of counselling and seat allotment. It does not mean that institutional or NRI quota seats have been abolished. These seats remain separate quota categories but will be processed through the centralised system.

Who Can Be Considered for Institutional-Quota Seats?

According to the official state release, institutional-quota eligibility includes:

  • Maharashtra-domicile candidates who completed their qualifying medical or dental degree outside Maharashtra.
  • Candidates from outside Maharashtra.
  • Foreign medical graduates.

Candidates must still satisfy the applicable entrance-examination, qualification, internship, registration and documentary conditions prescribed for the relevant postgraduate medical or dental course.

Inclusion in one of the groups above does not itself guarantee admission. Candidates must register through the official process, meet the final eligibility conditions and secure an allotment according to the notified merit and counselling rules.

Registration Deadline Becomes an Important Eligibility Cut-off

The state release says that the last date of registration will be treated as the cut-off date for deciding eligibility. A qualification or eligibility condition obtained after that date will not be considered for admission during the same academic year.

Candidates should therefore not wait until a later counselling round to complete a required qualification, registration or eligibility condition. They should read the current information booklet and complete the official registration process within the announced window.

What the Centralised Process Means for Candidates

The new system brings institutional, NRI and stray-vacancy admissions within the online counselling framework operated by the State CET Cell.

Candidates should expect official instructions covering registration, document submission, merit preparation, preference filling, seat allotment and reporting to be issued through the Maharashtra CET Cell. Colleges should not be treated as an alternative route for direct institute-level admission outside the notified centralised process.

The detailed NEET-PGM and NEET-PGD schedule, seat matrix and round-specific instructions must still be checked on the official portal. Candidates should not assume that registration in an earlier national or state process automatically completes every requirement for the institutional or NRI quota.

What Candidates Should Do Now

  1. Visit the Maharashtra CET Cell’s 2026–27 CAP page and open the relevant NEET-PGM or NEET-PGD admission section.
  2. Read the current information booklet and every subsequent notice applicable to the course and quota.
  3. Check whether fresh registration, document upload or a separate institutional/NRI declaration is required.
  4. Complete all eligibility conditions before the official registration deadline.
  5. Keep the submitted application, payment acknowledgement and uploaded-document records safely.
  6. Fill preferences only through the official counselling portal when the option-entry window opens.
  7. Monitor the portal for the merit list, seat matrix, allotment result and reporting instructions.

Candidates seeking NRI-quota seats should rely on the documentary requirements in the current official booklet and quota notice. Requirements from an older academic year should not be assumed to remain unchanged.

Important Clarification

The official release confirms the end of the institute-level round, movement of institutional, NRI and stray-vacancy seats to centralised counselling, the stated institutional-quota eligibility groups and the registration cut-off rule.

Candidates may see additional claims about penalties or debarment for not joining a final-round seat. Such a penalty should be followed only if it appears in the controlling 2026 rules, current information booklet or a subsequent official CET Cell notice. It should not be assumed from unofficial summaries.
