JoSAA counselling reaches its final stop today. The fifth and last round of seat allotment for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs will be released after 5 PM at josaa.nic.in — and this round comes with a rule that changes the entire calculus for candidates still hoping to trade up.

No More Waiting for a Better Offer

Every round until now has allowed candidates to "float" or "slide" — effectively staying in the running for a better seat while holding onto their current one. Round 5 removes that option entirely. Candidates allotted a seat today have exactly two choices: freeze it and proceed with admission, or exit/withdraw from the process altogether. There is no middle ground this time, which means candidates need to decide today whether their Round 5 offer is one they're willing to accept as final.

The Four Steps Between Allotment and Admission

StepWhat It Involves
1. Seat ConfirmationAccept the allotted seat on the portal
2. Document UploadSubmit mandatory certificates and photographs as specified
3. Fee PaymentPay the seat acceptance fee online
4. Query ResponseResolve any document discrepancies flagged by verification officers

Skipping any one of these steps has the same consequence: automatic cancellation of the allotted seat, with no route back into subsequent rounds — because for most candidates, there are no subsequent JoSAA rounds left.

The Fee That Only NIT+ System Candidates Need to Worry About

A detail specific to this round: candidates provisionally allotted seats in the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs) — not IITs — must pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) between July 22 and 24 to secure their seat.

CategoryPAF Amount
SC / ST / PwDINR 20,000
All Other CandidatesINR 45,000

Non-payment within this window results in the seat being rejected outright — there's no grace period built into this step.

Two Different Rank Systems, One Portal

Candidates checking cutoffs today should note that IIT seats are ranked using JEE Advanced ranks, while NIT, IIEST, IIIT, and other GFTI seats use JEE Main ranks. This distinction matters when comparing opening and closing ranks across institute types on the OR-CR (Opening Rank-Closing Rank) section of josaa.nic.in.

What Happens to Seats Nobody Takes

Any seat that remains vacant after today's round doesn't stay with JoSAA — it moves directly to CSAB special counselling, with registration opening on July 28. Importantly, candidates who registered for JoSAA are not automatically enrolled in CSAB; they'll need to register separately at csab.nic.in if they want to be considered for these leftover seats.

How to Check Your Round 5 Allotment

  1. Visit josaa.nic.in and click the seat allotment link
  2. Log in using your JEE Main 2026 application number and password
  3. View your allotted college, branch, and seat type on the dashboard
  4. Download the Provisional Seat Allotment Letter once document verification is complete — this will be required for physical reporting

Note: JoSAA does not send a separate seat intimation email — all allotment details appear exclusively on the portal, so candidates need to check it directly rather than wait for a notification.
