On March 17, 2025, Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), inaugurated the S. Ramakrishnan Centre of Excellence at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). This new research facility is dedicated to advancing space technology and supporting India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative by fostering self-reliance in cutting-edge space innovations.

Named after S. Ramakrishnan, an IIT Madras alumnus and renowned aerospace engineer, the centre will focus on Fluid and Thermal Sciences, addressing critical challenges in spacecraft and launch vehicle thermal management. This collaboration between ISRO and IIT Madras aims to reduce India’s dependency on foreign technologies while attracting global talent and research funding.

Dr. Narayanan highlighted ISRO’s achievements in cryogenic engine technology during the inauguration, stating that India has developed three distinct cryogenic engines, including a human-rated engine, a feat achieved by only six countries worldwide. He emphasized that this new centre will further enhance India’s capabilities in space exploration and innovation.

The partnership between ISRO and IIT Madras is bolstered by an initial seed funding of ₹1.84 crore provided by ISRO. This funding will establish essential infrastructure for research projects, including studies on combustion instability in hybrid rockets and cryo-tank thermodynamics. The centre will serve as a hub for advanced academic research, bridging the gap between industry and academia.

Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that as space exploration expands, there is an increasing need for technologies to address thermal and cooling requirements. He believes the centre will develop effective solutions for these challenges.

This initiative reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in space technology while fostering innovation through strategic partnerships between government agencies and academic institutions. The S. Ramakrishnan Centre of Excellence is set to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s space program and strengthening its technological self-reliance.
