Delhi, India: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur recently inaugurated the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence dedicated to promoting the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and other data science technologies in India's mining industry.

The center will work to apply AI-based methods and approaches to understand geological data and improve different areas in mining, such as exploration, planning, and mining operations. The idea behind establishing such an institution is to create practical solutions to real-life problems using the skills and knowledge of mining engineers and geologists.

The Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence was funded by Vikram Sodhi, vice-chairman of Mineros SA and managing partner of Sun Valley Investments. In total, the expert provided the necessary financing for the center over the next five years.

Commenting on the event, the director of IIT Kharagpur, Suman Chakraborty, emphasized that the center is an embodiment of the institute's approach to impactful research. The leader explained that finding solutions to different issues faced by the industry requires interdisciplinarity and the use of new methods such as AI.

One major characteristic of the center would include its grand challenges program. The Grand Challenges Programme would see researchers engaging in solving real industrial problems using real datasets from their partners. It is anticipated that the approach used will help in ensuring that viable solutions are obtained that can be put into practice.

On the whole, it can be said that the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence will help to close the gap between high tech and the mining sector. In other words, the focus on innovation, partnership, and sustainability will help to facilitate the modernization of the mining sector in India.
