Climate change is no longer just a topic for scientists and policymakers — it is now a full-fledged academic discipline at India's largest open university. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has officially launched its Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Change program, becoming the first open university in India to offer a dedicated postgraduate qualification in this field. Applications are open now and close on July 15, 2026. Eligible candidates can apply at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.
This is a significant moment for Indian higher education. With climate-related careers expanding rapidly across government, research, international organizations, and the private sector, IGNOU's new program arrives at exactly the right time.

Who Is This Program For?
IGNOU has kept eligibility deliberately broad — any graduate, regardless of their undergraduate subject, can apply. The university has specifically invited graduates, working professionals, policymakers, teachers, and anyone with a genuine interest in environmental issues to enroll. This is not a program reserved for science students alone, which makes it genuinely accessible.
What You Will Study
The MSc Climate Change is a multidisciplinary program designed to give students both scientific understanding and real-world problem-solving skills. The curriculum spans a wide range of subjects including climate science, water resources, energy systems, agriculture and food security, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity conservation, waste management, circular economy, environmental health, ecosystem restoration, environmental law and governance, and climate assessment tools.
The program is coordinated by V Venkatramanan and Shachi Shah — both recognised experts in environment, sustainability, and climate science.
The Exit Option Advantage
One of the most student-friendly features of this program is the built-in exit option. If you complete the first year successfully but choose not to continue, you will be awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change (PGDCCC) — a standalone, credible qualification that carries real value in the job market. This flexibility makes the program particularly attractive for working professionals who may not be able to commit to a full two-year course upfront.
Refund Policy — Read Before You Apply
The registration fee is non-refundable. If your admission is cancelled before confirmation, a full refund of the program fee is provided. After confirmation, 15% of the program fee — up to Rs. 2,000 — will be deducted. No refund is available after 60 days from the last date of admission.
With climate careers growing fast and IGNOU's ODL model removing the barriers of location and rigid timetables, this is one of the most accessible routes into a future-ready field. Apply before July 15 at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.
