The CLAT 2026 counselling process is currently in a vital phase as candidates navigate the first allotment results. Law aspirants are now weighing their options between freezing their current seats or opting for the float category to aim for a better NLU.The Consortium of NLUs has outlined a clear schedule for subsequent rounds, with the second merit list expected soon.

The admissions cycle for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026 is moving into its next significant phase following the release of the first provisional allotment list on January 7, 2026. This period is defined by a strategic wait for seat upgradation, a mechanism that allows students to move up their preference list as vacancies arise in higher-ranked National Law Universities (NLUs). Currently, those who have been allotted a seat are required to complete their confirmation fee payments and document uploads. The Consortium of NLUs is facilitating the first round of interactions, with a clear focus on the "Float" option for those who believe their rank may eventually secure them a spot in a more preferred institution. The ongoing counselling process remains the only gateway for entry into 24 participating NLUs for the 2026-27 academic year.

Understanding the Allotment and Upgradation Options

Candidates participating in the CLAT 2026 counselling have three primary choices after being assigned a seat. The decision made in this first round heavily influences the aspirants' journey through the subsequent four rounds of allotment. Each choice carries specific financial and administrative implications that must be handled before the January 15 deadline.

  • Freeze Option: This is for students who are satisfied with their current allotment and do not wish to be considered for any further seat upgradation. Choosing this means the candidate's admission to that specific NLU is finalized, provided all fees are paid.
  • Float Option: This is the most popular choice for those seeking an upgrade. It allows a candidate to hold their current seat while remaining eligible for a higher-preference NLU in the second or third allotment lists.
  • Exit Option: If a candidate decides not to pursue admission through CLAT 2026 anymore, they can exit the process, though this often results in the forfeiture of a portion of the registration fee.

Key Dates for the 2026 Admission Cycle

The Consortium has released a meticulous schedule to ensure the seat upgradation process remains transparent and efficient. Following the closure of the first round's confirmation window on January 15, the authorities will calculate the remaining vacancies to prepare the second merit list. This iterative approach is designed to ensure that the maximum number of upgradation opportunities are provided to deserving candidates based on their All India Rank (AIR).

Event ComponentScheduled DateTime / Deadline
First Allotment Fee PaymentJan 7 – Jan 15, 20261:00 PM
Publication of Second Allotment ListJanuary 22, 202610:00 AM
Second Round Confirmation WindowJan 22 – Jan 29, 20261:00 PM
Third Allotment List ReleaseFebruary 5, 202610:00 AM
Final (Fifth) Allotment ListMay 15, 202610:00 AM

Document Verification and Seat Confirmation

To remain eligible for seat upgradation, it is not enough to simply select the "Float" option; candidates must also upload the necessary documents for verification by their currently allotted NLU. If the portal flags any discrepancy in the category or marks of the aspirants, their allotment may be cancelled, effectively removing them from the subsequent rounds of counselling.

  1. Fee Payment: A non-refundable confirmation fee of ₹20,000 (standard for most categories) must be paid to secure the float or freeze status.
  2. Mark Sheets: Original 10th and 12th certificates are mandatory for UG candidates, while LLM applicants must provide graduation transcripts.
  3. Category Certificates: SC, ST, OBC, and EWS certificates must be in the format prescribed by the government to claim reservation benefits.
  4. Domicile Proof: Since many NLUs have a significant percentage of seats reserved for state residents, valid domicile documentation is crucial for those appearing in the state-quota merit lists.

Conclusion

The current stage of CLAT 2026 is a test of patience and precision for law students across the country. As the confirmation window for the first round closes, the anticipation for seat upgradation continues to grow, with the second allotment list expected to bring significant movement in the ranks. By adhering to the strict timelines for fee payment and document submission, candidates can maintain their eligibility for a better-ranked NLU. The structured nature of the counselling process ensures that every seat is filled based on merit and preference, ultimately shaping the next generation of legal professionals in India. As the academic session nears, the focus remains on the final transition of these aspirants from successful test-takers to law school students.
