Question 1

What are performing arts colleges?

Accepted Answer

Performing arts colleges teach music, dance, theatre and sometimes screen acting. They offer short certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees. Some are government institutions such as NSD, FTII, Kathak Kendra and Kalakshetra. Others are universities such as BHU, Delhi University, CUTN, University of Hyderabad and NMIMS.

Question 2

Which is the best performing arts college in India?

Accepted Answer

There is no single best college, and I found no official ranking. NSD is well known for theatre, FTII for screen acting, Kathak Kendra for Kathak, Kalakshetra for classical arts and BHU for a central university degree. The best choice depends on your art form, entry route and budget.

Question 3

Is there an official ranking of performing arts colleges?

Accepted Answer

I did not find an official ranking. Be careful with lists that call colleges "top 10" without explaining how they were chosen. Compare each college on course content, entry route, recognition and cost, using the college's own pages.

Question 4

What can I study after Class 12 in performing arts?

Accepted Answer

You can take a short certificate, a diploma or a bachelor's degree. Examples include NSD's 3-year Diploma in Dramatic Arts, Kalakshetra's 4-year diplomas, a BPA at BHU, a BPA in Music at CUTN, and BA (Hons) programmes in music at NMIMS.

Question 5

Is CUET UG compulsory for performing arts colleges?

Accepted Answer

No, not for every college. BHU's BPA and Delhi University use CUET UG. NSD, Kalakshetra and Kathak Kendra use their own application and selection. FTII uses its own Joint Entrance Test. Read each college's notice, because rules can change.

Question 6

How do I get admission to the National School of Drama?

Accepted Answer

Apply during the admission window on nsd.gov.in. The 2026-29 diploma batch accepted applications from 17 March to 17 April 2026. After applying, follow the selection steps in the official notice. I did not verify the full selection process, so read it there.

Question 7

Do I need prior experience to join?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the course. Some short courses list only an age range and a Class 12 pass. Degrees and diplomas often test your skill through an audition or practical test. Read the notice for each course, and practise before you apply even if experience is not mandatory.

Question 8

What are the age limits?

Accepted Answer

They differ by college. Kathak Kendra's elementary course is for ages 10 to 15 and its advanced course for ages 19 to 21, as on 1 June 2026. Kalakshetra diplomas normally need an age up to 25 on 1 July 2026. NSD's Mumbai certificate accepted ages 18 to 60.

Question 9

Which performing arts colleges are government institutions?

Accepted Answer

NSD, FTII, Kathak Kendra and Kalakshetra are public institutions. BHU, CUTN, the University of Hyderabad and Delhi University are central universities. NMIMS is a private university. Government status does not guarantee a seat or lower cost for every course, so check each fee notice.

Question 10

How much do performing arts courses cost?

Accepted Answer

Fees vary a lot and I could not verify most of them. NSD's Srinagar short course listed ₹10,000 without hostel and ₹20,000 with hostel. Sources for NMIMS disagree, from about ₹8 lakh to ₹20 lakh in one place and about ₹13.5 lakh in another. Ask for a written fee list.

Question 11

Is a diploma as valuable as a degree?

Accepted Answer

Not always. A diploma gives strong practical training, but a degree may matter more for teaching jobs or further study. Ask the college in writing what its diploma is accepted for, and check whether it is recognised for the path you want.

Question 12

Do I have to give an audition?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes for performance courses. BHU holds a practical test after CUET UG, and Delhi University fills part of its extracurricular quota through trials. NSD and others use their own selection steps. Prepare a short piece, and check the notice for the exact format.

Question 13

When do performing arts admissions start?

Accepted Answer

In 2026, NSD and FTII applications ran in March and April, CUET UG ran from 11 to 31 May, and BHU's practical test was held from 8 to 11 August. I did not find confirmed 2027 dates, so check each college's website from December.

Question 14

Which performing arts colleges are in Mumbai?

Accepted Answer

From this list, NMIMS School of Performing Arts offers BA (Hons) programmes in Indian Music and Western Contemporary Music. NSD also ran a three-month certificate in Mumbai. Other Mumbai colleges exist, so check recognition and the entry route before applying.

Question 15

What jobs can I get after a performing arts course?

Accepted Answer

Graduates work as performers, teachers, choreographers, directors, sound or music artists, stage designers and arts managers. Many careers are project-based. No placement is guaranteed, and I did not find reliable salary data to quote.

Question 16

Can I study performing arts while working?

Accepted Answer

Short courses are the likeliest fit. NSD's regional and city certificate courses, such as the three-month Mumbai course, are examples. Full diplomas and degrees usually need full-time attendance, so ask the college about class timings before you plan.

Question 17

How do I avoid fake or unrecognised colleges?

Accepted Answer

Use the college's own website, check the awarding university on the UGC site, ask in writing what a diploma is accepted for, and pay only through official channels. Avoid anyone who promises a seat in exchange for a fee outside the official process.

Question 18

Can I apply to more than one college?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is wise to. Different colleges use different routes and dates. Apply to three to five, keep a backup that admits through marks, and keep a calendar so no deadline is missed.
