Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited IIT Madras on March 16, 2025, to explore the institute's advanced research facilities and engage with groundbreaking innovations. His tour included the Hyperloop testing facility, where he witnessed a live demonstration of this cutting-edge transportation technology, which promises to revolutionize travel in India.

During his visit, Vaishnaw was accompanied by IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti and other senior researchers. The minister announced that the 410-meter-long Hyperloop tube at IIT Madras is set to become the world’s longest high-speed tube, marking a significant milestone in India's quest for futuristic transportation solutions. The project has received substantial support from the Ministry of Railways, which allocated funding and technical assistance to drive its development.

In addition to the Hyperloop, Vaishnaw engaged with the ePlane project, an IIT Madras-incubated startup focused on launching India’s first flying electric taxi. This initiative reflects the institute's commitment to fostering innovation in sustainable transportation.

Vaishnaw also visited the Centre for Innovation (CFI) at IIT Madras, where he interacted with students and researchers working on various projects, including the SHAKTI microprocessor, India’s first indigenous microprocessor. This initiative aims to enhance India’s capabilities in semiconductor technology and is part of a broader effort to achieve self-reliance in electronics manufacturing.

At the Open House 2025, an exhibition showcasing student-led innovations, Vaishnaw praised the creativity and ingenuity of young engineers. He emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for positioning India as a global leader in technology and innovation.

The minister's visit underscored the government's commitment to supporting technological advancements in India. By investing in research and development at institutions like IIT Madras, the government aims to nurture a new generation of innovators who can contribute significantly to the country's economic growth and technological landscape.

Overall, Ashwini Vaishnaw's tour of IIT Madras not only highlighted the institute's pioneering research but also reinforced the importance of collaboration between academia and government in driving India's technological future.
