In a major development for the Indian creative and digital economy, the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), a new national center of excellence, has opened its doors for admissions this August. The institute is modeled on the lines of the prestigious IITs and IIMs, aiming to create a world-class talent pool in the rapidly growing AVGC-XR sector (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality).
A First-of-its-Kind Institute
Launched by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and backed by industry bodies like FICCI and CII, IICT's initial campus is located at the NFDC premises in Mumbai, with a permanent, state-of-the-art campus planned for Film City, Goregaon, in the coming years. The institute aims to be a lighthouse for the creative technology ecosystem by providing advanced, industry-aligned training.
IICT has already forged strong partnerships with global tech giants, including Google, YouTube, Adobe, Meta, Microsoft, and NVIDIA. These collaborations are designed to enhance the curriculum, offer scholarships, provide internship opportunities, and ensure robust placement support for its students. An MoU has also been signed with the University of York, UK, which will facilitate collaborative research and global certification.
Courses and Admission Process
For its inaugural batch, IICT is offering a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs across various creative technology specializations. The detailed curriculum is expected to be announced soon, but the courses are meticulously designed to meet global standards.
Key Course Offerings Include:
- Gaming: Specialised courses in advanced video gaming skills and 3D character game art.
- Animation, Comics, and XR: Programs in animation film design, character and creature animation, and virtual production.
- Post-Production: Courses in film technology, visual effects mastery, and media tech workflow.
Admission to the institute will be entirely online. Candidates will be evaluated based on their past academic merit in Class 12, followed by an institute-level Media and Entertainment Creative Aptitude Test (MECAT), a Group Discussion, and a Personal Interview.
