IIT Delhi Launches Groundbreaking B.Tech in Design Programme for 2025–26 Academic Year
IIT Delhi introduces a new 4-year B.Tech in Design for the 2025-26 academic year, combining engineering and design thinking. Admission requires qualifying both JEE Advanced and UCEED for 20 seats.

In a significant stride towards fostering interdisciplinary innovation, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has officially announced the launch of a new four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Design programme, set to commence from the 2025–26 academic year. This pioneering initiative by the institute's Department of Design aims to bridge the gap between engineering rigor and creative design thinking, preparing students to tackle complex socio-technical challenges.
The B.Tech in Design program is meticulously crafted for empathetic and creative minds keen on understanding the intricate systems around us and developing impactful interventions. Its curriculum is uniquely transdisciplinary, blending the systematic approach characteristic of engineering education with the imaginative leaps central to design. Students will delve into prevalent technologies, systematic design thinking processes, research methods for analyzing socio-technical systems, and critical communication and teamwork skills.
A Fusion of Engineering and Design Thinking:
The four-year program requires students to complete a total of 155 credits. Approximately half of the coursework will focus on core design disciplines, including areas like product design, user experience (UX/UI), and strategic design. The remaining credits will be drawn from various other departments, centres, and schools within IIT Delhi, ensuring a holistic education that integrates design with disciplines such as engineering, management, humanities, and public policy. This structure is intended to foster seamless collaboration and leverage IIT Delhi’s diverse academic strengths.
Exclusive Admission Process: JEE Advanced and UCEED Mandatory:
Admission to this highly specialized B.Tech in Design program will be exceptionally competitive and unique among IIT undergraduate offerings. Aspiring candidates must meet stringent eligibility criteria by qualifying in two prominent national-level entrance examinations:
- JEE Advanced: Candidates must secure a valid rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced).
- UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design): In addition to JEE Advanced, applicants must also qualify the UCEED, which assesses design aptitude.
Only candidates who successfully clear both JEE Advanced and UCEED will be considered for admission, with shortlisting based on their combined performance in these two tests.
Eligibility and Intake:
The program will begin with an initial, highly selective intake of 20 students. To be eligible, candidates must have passed their Class 12th (or equivalent) examination in either 2024 or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. For UCEED eligibility, candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 2000, with a five-year age relaxation applicable for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories.
This new B.Tech program underscores IIT Delhi's commitment to nurturing a new generation of professionals capable of driving innovation. Graduates are expected to emerge as versatile leaders who can contribute significantly to industry and society by applying advanced engineering knowledge alongside empathetic, human-centered design principles.
Aspirants are advised to regularly visit the official IIT Delhi website, www.iitd.ac.in, and the JEE Advanced and UCEED portals for detailed admission brochures, application timelines, and any further updates.
