To tackle the worrying decline in postgraduate engineering enrolments, AICTE has proposed a 50% hike in MTech scholarships. This bold move aims to improve the appeal of higher technical education. If approved, the hike will increase the stipend from ₹12,400 to ₹18,000 monthly, encouraging more GATE-qualified students to pursue MTech. The final decision is awaited from the Ministry of Education.

In response to the sharp drop in enrolments for postgraduate engineering programs, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has proposed a significant increase in the monthly MTech scholarship offered to GATE-qualified students. The council aims to raise the stipend amount by 50%, from the existing ₹12,400 to ₹18,000 per month. This proposal is under review by the Ministry of Education and, if approved, could substantially improve enrolment in MTech programs across the country.

Why the MTech Scholarship Hike Is Being Proposed

AICTE data reveals that nearly 50% of MTech seats remain vacant every year due to lack of student interest.

Many students are opting for jobs immediately after BTech instead of pursuing postgraduate studies.

The existing MTech scholarship is seen as inadequate to cover living and academic expenses.

Increasing the scholarship is expected to restore interest in higher technical education and research.

The AICTE believes that better financial incentives will increase the value and attractiveness of the MTech route.

Expected Benefits of the Hike

A 50% increase would raise the monthly stipend for MTech students to ₹18,000.

More students may choose MTech over private jobs, especially in research and academic sectors.

Improved enrolment will strengthen India’s higher technical education system.

It could also lead to better-qualified candidates for future faculty and research roles.

This move aligns with national objectives to enhance research output and innovation in engineering.

Current Status and Future Outlook

The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Education.

If approved, the revised scholarship will apply to all GATE-qualified MTech students in AICTE-approved institutions.

Institutes are also expected to see reduced vacancy rates in postgraduate seats.

Students are advised to stay updated through official AICTE notifications.

Conclusion
The proposed MTech scholarship hike by AICTE is a strategic initiative aimed at reversing declining enrolment trends. By offering better financial support, it seeks to revive academic interest among engineering graduates and strengthen India's technological future.
