The XAT 2026 application window is officially open, and aspiring MBA students can now begin their registration for one of the country's most prestigious management entrance exams. XLRI Jamshedpur, the conducting body of the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT), has announced that the registration process commenced on July 10, 2025, and will continue until the deadline of December 5, 2025. This is a major update for thousands of aspirants eyeing admission to XLRI and more than 250 other top B-schools across India.
The XAT 2026 exam date has also been confirmed: it will be conducted on January 4, 2026. This announcement provides a clear timeline for candidates to plan their preparation and application strategy well in advance.
Key Instructions for XAT 2026 Applicants
XLRI has released a detailed set of instructions to guide aspirants through the registration process. It's crucial for candidates to follow these guidelines carefully to avoid any complications, as the application process is a mandatory first step toward admission.
- Application Fee: The registration fee for XAT 2026 is ₹2,200. Candidates who wish to apply to XLRI's programs must pay an additional fee of ₹200 for each program they apply to. This fee is non-refundable.
- Online-Only Registration: The entire application process, including registration, form filling, and fee payment, is exclusively online via the official website, xatonline.in. There is no provision for offline application.
- No Edit After Submission: Once the application form is submitted and the fee is paid, candidates will not be able to make any changes to the details provided. Therefore, aspirants are strongly advised to carefully review all information—including their personal details, academic scores, and chosen test cities—before the final submission.
- Documents Required: Candidates must have soft copies of their passport-size photograph and signature ready for upload. The images should meet the specified size and format requirements.
- Separate XLRI Application: It is important to note that registering for XAT does not automatically mean a candidate has applied to XLRI. To be considered for XLRI's flagship PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) programs, a candidate must select and apply to them separately within the same application form by paying the additional fees.
- No Minimum Percentage Criterion: Unlike some other entrance exams, XAT does not have a minimum percentage requirement in graduation. Candidates holding a bachelor's degree of a minimum of three years' duration or its equivalent from a recognized university are eligible to apply. Students in their final year of graduation are also eligible.
What to Expect on the XAT 2026 Exam
The XAT exam is known for its unique format, especially its focus on Decision Making (DM). It consists of five sections: Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, General Knowledge, and an Essay Writing section (which is not scored for percentile calculation but is a crucial part of the selection process). This year, XLRI has clarified that there is no sectional time limit, allowing candidates to freely move between sections to manage their time effectively.
This long application window gives aspirants ample time to prepare. The XAT is a challenging exam that requires focused preparation beyond just the quantitative and verbal sections. Aspirants must devote sufficient time to the Decision Making and General Knowledge sections to perform well and meet the high cut-offs of XLRI and other top B-schools.
