The admission gateway to the prestigious MIT Institute of Design (MITID) is officially open. Aspirants for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programs must register for the mandatory MIT Design Entrance Test (MIT DET) 2026. The online registration window, which began on October 17, 2025, has a strict and non-negotiable deadline of February 28, 2026.

This deadline marks the end of the application phase for the first and major admission cycle. Candidates are strongly advised to submit their forms and the application fee (₹3,000 for Indian Nationals) well in advance to avoid last-minute technical difficulties.

Comprehensive Three-Stage Selection Process

Admission to MITID is based on a holistic, multi-stage evaluation process, designed to assess a candidate's complete creative aptitude, which includes:

  1. Phase 1: MIT DET (Design Entrance Test): The written aptitude test (3-hour duration) to be held on April 5, 2026.
  2. Phase 2: Studio Test: A hands-on, practical test to evaluate problem-solving and visualization skills.
  3. Phase 3: Portfolio Review and Personal Interview (PI): The final round assessing the candidate's creative works, design thinking, and communication skills.

The DET exam carries approximately 25% weightage in the final merit list, making performance in the Studio Test and Personal Interview equally critical for final selection.

Understanding the MIT DET Exam Pattern

The 3-hour MIT DET written exam is a hybrid format, consisting of three primary components:

  • Objective/MCQ Test (Computer-Based): Evaluates Design Inclination (visual clues, general awareness of art/design), Analytical Reasoning, and Logical Thinking Skills.
  • Descriptive Test (Computer-Based): Assesses the ability to express ideas clearly through written text boxes.
  • Drawing Exam (Offline Test): This physical test requires candidates to draw/sketch using pens, pencils, or colours on A4 sheets provided at the centre, assessing creative ability and observation skills.

Eligibility Check: Candidates from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) who have passed or are appearing for their 10+2 (HSC) examination are eligible for the B.Des program. M.Des aspirants require a Bachelor's Degree.

Aspirants are advised to dedicate equal effort to preparing for the written test and compiling a comprehensive Portfolio showcasing their creative range for the subsequent Studio Test and PI.
