GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is one of the most prestigious engineering entrance examinations in India, opening doors to postgraduate studies and coveted positions in Public Sector Undertakings. The registration process requires careful attention to detail and precise document specifications.

Why Early Preparation? Preparing documents beforehand eliminates last-minute stress, reduces the chance of errors, and ensures that candidates meet all the technical specifications for digital uploads.

Anticipated Registration: While GATE 2026 registration dates will be officially released by the organizing IIT (expected to be IIT Roorkee for GATE 2026), the application window typically opens around August/September. This makes today, July 23, 2025, an ideal time to start organizing your documents.

Official Updates: Aspirants should regularly check the official GATE website (usually gate.iitkgp.ac.in or the current year's organizing IIT's GATE portal) for the exact registration schedule and the release of the information brochure.

Essential Documents & Specifications for GATE 2026

Meeting the precise specifications for digital documents is paramount for a successful GATE 2026 application. Incorrect formats or sizes can lead to rejection.

Valid Photo ID Proof:

A scanned copy of a valid photo ID proof is essential. Ensure all personal information on the ID is updated and correct.

Accepted ID Proofs: Aadhaar ID (preferable), Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, and Driving License. For international candidates, only a valid passport, government-issued ID, or driving license will be accepted.

Scanned Passport Photograph:

  • Dimensions: 3.5 cm (width) X 4.5 cm (height).
  • Face Coverage: Candidate's face should cover 60-70% of the photo.
  • Background: Must be a plain white background.

  • File Size: Between 5 KB and 200 KB.
  • Scanned Area: Professionally scanned within a rectangular box.
  • Resolution (Box Size): Maximum 160 x 560 pixels, minimum 80 x 280 pixels.

Category/PwD/Dyslexic Certificates (in PDF format):

  • SC/ST Candidates: Scanned copy of their category certificate in PDF format.
  • PwD Candidates: Scanned copy of their PwD certificate in PDF format.
  • Dyslexic Candidates: Scanned copy of their Dyslexic certificate in PDF format.

Note: OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes - Non-Creamy Layer) and EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates are generally not required to submit their category certificates during registration. They usually need to submit a self-declaration and present the certificate during admission/counselling.

Key Preparation Tips for a Smooth Application

Beyond simply gathering documents, some strategic preparation can make the GATE 2026 registration process much smoother for engineering aspirants.

Create a Checklist: List all the documents required along with their specifications. Tick them off as you prepare each one.

Professional Scanning: If you do not have access to a good scanner or are unsure about meeting specifications, consider getting your documents professionally scanned.

Digital Folder: Create a dedicated digital folder on your computer to store all scanned documents with appropriate filenames for easy access during registration.

Review Information: Carefully review all personal information to ensure it matches across all documents and the GATE application form. Discrepancies can lead to problems later.

Read the Information Brochure: Once released, the official GATE 2026 Information Brochure will be the definitive source for all instructions and specifications. Read it thoroughly before starting your application.
