IIT Bombay has initiated the high-stakes evaluation process for CEED 2026 following the national entrance exam held on January 18.The assessment follows a two-step sequence where Part A performance determines the eligibility for the manual grading of Part B booklets. Final results, combining both sections with a 25:75 weightage, are expected to be declared on March 4, 2026.

Following the successful conduct of the Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) 2026 on January 18, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has commenced the formal evaluation of candidate performances. This national-level assessment is the gateway for postgraduate design admissions (M.Des and Ph.D.) across the IITs and IISc Bangalore. The process is notably rigorous, utilizing a mix of automated scoring for objective sections and expert panel reviews for creative components. The initial data processing is focused on Part A, which serves as the primary screening gate for all test-takers. Every evaluation stage is time-bound, ensuring that the results remain on track for the scheduled March 4 declaration.

The Two-Step Assessment Framework

The CEED exam structure necessitates a sequential approach to grading. While all candidates attempt both Part A and Part B, the evaluation of the subjective Part B answer books is reserved exclusively for those who meet the Part A shortlisting cutoff. This cutoff is calculated using a statistical formula involving the mean and standard deviation of the entire cohort's performance.

  • Part A (Objective): This computer-based section is assessed immediately through automated systems. It tests visualization, spatial ability, and design sensitivity.
  • Part B (Subjective): Shortlisted candidates have their drawing and creativity tasks reviewed manually by a panel of design educators.
  • Weightage Balance: The final merit list is heavily influenced by the Part B score, which carries 75% of the total weight.
  • No Re-totaling: IIT Bombay maintains a strict policy where no requests for re-evaluation or re-checking of the subjective section are entertained.

Timeline of Post-Exam Milestones

The current evaluation phase will soon reach its first public milestone with the release of the draft answer keys on January 20, 2026. This allows candidates to audit their Part A responses before the final merit lists are processed.

  1. Draft Answer Key: Expected on January 20 for Part A only.
  2. Objection Window: Candidates can submit comments until January 22, 5:00 PM.
  3. Final Key & Cutoffs: The verified answer key and shortlisting marks will be released on January 28 and February 5, respectively.
  4. Final Results: The consolidated results will be available on the official portal on March 4, 2026.

Conclusion

The ongoing evaluation at IIT Bombay is a critical period of transition for design students across the country. By combining a data-driven qualifying round in Part A with a qualitative review in Part B, the university ensures that only the most capable creative minds advance to the postgraduate level. As the academic world awaits the final rankings in March, the meticulous evaluation process stands as a testament to the high standards of Indian design education. Candidates are encouraged to monitor the candidate portal for the upcoming answer key updates to stay informed of their standing in this competitive cycle
